Grace Elizabeth Diehl was born in Manhattan, New York. Having grown up mostly in the rural countryside of New York’s Hudson Valley, she has always been close to nature and has sought to capture its beauty through art. Her early experiments with landscapes and encouragement from grade school teachers fostered an interest in drawing and painting, which she pursued independently, diligently honing her artistic talent while also pursuing a full-time career in the computer industry and raising two kids. Throughout her journey, she has immersed herself in the art community, studying with oil painters Todd Casey, Paul McCormack, Andrew Lattimore and Lucas Bononi (privately). She also renewed her focus on drawing, studying for two years under the tutelage of Vince Natale at the Woodstock School of Art in Woodstock, NY. At the present, she partakes in on-line studies. Inspired by the Old Masters during her visits to the New York MET, Grace exhibits the style of classical realism in her work, which focuses on inventing an open narrative from which the viewer can devise their own meaning. She incorporates the subject matter of her primary influences, nature and wildlife, into her artwork, unafraid to throw in a little whimsey, such a butterfly or feathered friend, into an otherwise realistic arrangement in her studio. Recently, Grace and her husband moved to southern California, where she pursues plein air as well as still life painting.
StatementI often capture the landscape and atmosphere in natural light when I'm painting plein air. I also enjoy still life painting which on the other hand, involves arranging objects in a specific composition allowing me to control the light in my studio. Both allow me to express my creativity in capturing light and color. To express my ideas and thoughts, I use oil paints. Drawing and painting are my way of satisfying a deep feeling of expression within myself. I feel it is my way of being heard in a noisy world.Whether I am in the studio or out in the field, I find solace and escape into my own world of whatever I create it to be.
