Maryanne McGuire
I am a fine art mixed media photographer based in San Diego. My love of travel, the ocean, and passion for photography fuels all my creative skills. When I dive into the sea, I’m renewed with an insular calm and humbled by its undulating power. In addition,I am inspired by the spirit and humor of my mom, a advocate of women’s rights, who loved me enough to let me find my own current
StatementI have lived most of my life just steps from the ocean, and its beauty and power have profoundly influenced my work. As an avid swimmer, I feel energized and at peace in its embrace, often drawn to its tranquility, which inspires me to take my camera into this weightless world and share a siren’s point of view.
My artwork focuses on photographing women underwater, capturing moments where they release the burdens of the world and embrace the freedom that comes from letting go. In this weightless environment, I explore the connection between vulnerability and resilience. This concept is central to my work, revealing deeper emotional layers of strength that often go unnoticed. In the ethereal space of water, vulnerability transforms into freedom, allowing the women I photograph to express themselves beyond the constraints of everyday life. Through my lens, I create a space to celebrate their grace and strength, capturing the beauty in what is often overlooked.
I see myself in these images, as embracing vulnerability has helped me navigate the hardships in my own life, allowing me to find strength in fragility. My goal is to show that vulnerability is not something to hide but a powerful space where healing begins. Through my work, I invite viewers to reflect on their own moments of struggle and transformation, offering them a glimpse into the strength that comes from embracing their true selves rather than resisting it.
