Judy Berberian

Judy Berberian comes from a lineage of artists and has devoted her life to exploring and creating in a variety of art forms, including painting, fashion design, fiber arts, and music.  Her father, a renowned painter, has been a major influence on her artistic journey.  She has showcased her fashion designs at Paris Fashion Week, curated major shows in Los Angeles, and has released music on all major music platforms.  Her recent work captured the attention of prominent author and neuroscientist Dr. Tara Swart, who acquired one of her intriguing resin snake paintings. 

In creating this installation, I drew inspiration from John Linthurst’s evocative artwork of Amelia Earhart. His portrayal of Earhart not only captures her indomitable spirit but also ignites a sense of boundless exploration and the courage to venture into the unknown. This collaborative journey between Linthurst and myself reflects the profound theme of our exhibit, "Mentors: Collaboration & Inspiration."The installation features paper airplanes crafted from the pages of an old atlas, suspended by fishing wire from a dried anise bush branch. Each airplane points in different directions, mirroring the atlas coordinates and symbolizing the multitude of paths and possibilities that life presents us. The use of atlas pages represents the timeless quest for discovery and the maps that guide us, while the airplanes evoke a sense of freedom, adventure, and the pursuit of dreams.     

   Interspersed among the atlas airplanes are select airplanes made of gold tissue paper, their reflective sheen catching the light and creating a dynamic visual interplay. These golden airplanes symbolize the sparks of inspiration and moments of clarity that illuminate our journeys, reminding us of the precious insights that guide us through our explorations.               

The anise bush branch, which I brought home and lived with for some time, serves as a grounding yet organic element, connecting the ethereal planes to the earth. It signifies the importance of rooting ourselves in our experiences and the natural world, even as we aspire to soar to new heights.This piece is a testament to the mentorship and inspiration shared between artists. It reflects how we draw strength from one another’s work, allowing our unique perspectives to coalesce into something greater. Through this collaboration, we celebrate the spirit of exploration and the power of creative synergy.
