Josephine Behrend

As a contemporary painter, my work explores the intersection of nature, technology, and abstraction. Much of my artistic interest has been shaped by my educational and professional background. I studied painting and the art of the Venetian Renaissance masters at the University of Venice, Italy, through a study abroad program. I received an undergraduate degree in art history from UC Berkeley and later earned a Master's degree in mechanical engineering and environmental chemistry from the same university. I have been practicing art ever since.

Statement

My paintings allude to the entropic forces at play in our contemporary world, where technology and industry mutate the natural environment, resulting in randomness, decomposition, and disorder. Although my work often uses nature as a pretext, its true focus is the paint itself. I aim to express the materiality of the medium, allowing the paint to peel, bleed, and flow, thereby conveying emotion or movement.
