Deborah Ramos

Deborah Ramos, a San Diego native, was influenced by the grassroots activism that evolved during the 60’s and 70’s. Deborah is a graduate of San Diego State University where she studied art, textiles, costume design and history of theatre. All roads ultimately led Deborah to be an educator for over 20 years, working with Special Needs students, teaching art, English and independent living skills.

She continues to voice her protest and passion through her poetry and art. Deborah is the author of from the earthen drum of my body and is currently working on a second collection. Deborah's poems are powerful, sensual, and visceral, using language that is full of vision and attitude. She writes about the sacred feminine, primal desires, ancient affairs, roadkill, this crumbling earth and her cats. Her poetry has appeared in publications such as, SageWoman, Rattlesnake Press, Dancing Goddess, National Beat Anthology, River of Earth and Sky, Border Voices,  Literary Sexts, A Year in Ink, San Diego Poetry Annual, South Broadway Ghost Society, and more.

As an artist, Deborah has exhibited her work in galleries throughout San Diego, including Spanish Village, Poway Center of Performing Arts, San Diego Fellow Calligraphers, La Jolla Art Association, Expressive Art in Liberty Station, Inspirations Gallery in Liberty Station, Oceanside Museum of Art, and Front Porch Gallery in Carlsbad. She recently curated the art exhibit The Electric Womb, at Inspirations Gallery in Liberty Station. Deborah expresses herself through passionate swirls of caran d’ ache, acrylics, and gouache. She creates layers of vibrant textures using natural elements such as African handcast paper, bark, papyrus, and shedded snakeskin.

Deborah’s creative life includes spending more time traveling, writing, painting, exploring photography, enjoying her granddaughters, as well as hosting Poets at the Grove readings in Balboa Park.

Statement

I  expresses myself through passionate swirls of caran d’ ache, acrylics, and gouache. I create layers of vibrant textures using natural elements such as African handcast paper, bark, papyrus, and shedded snakeskin to add depth and texture. My art tells stories about my passion for nature, cats, the ocean and the sacred feminine.
